It Starts With YOU!

I was recently working a flight to LAX, when a young lady walked up to my podium with a not so nice attitude. I began to assist her, hesitantly, because her tone matched the mean look on her face. Things only got worse when I told her the flight was completely full. She slammed down her belongings on the podium and began to shout obscenities to her mother through the phone. Now, normally, I would have turned her away but something told me not to. Not this time. I actually stepped from behind the podium and started talking to her in a calm

voice. I got her to tone it down and even got her to smile. Long story short, I was able to get her on the flight and even got her to apologize to her mom. With eyes full of tears, she hugged me, apologized for her actions and thanked me. She shared some issues she was having and just needed someone to show they cared.

Sometimes, anger, hurt, attitude, and frustrations aren’t directed towards you. Every now and then, you have to give people a chance. We are so ready to snap on one another that we forget that we too might need some compassion. Especially this current generation. I get so upset when baby boomers belittle younger people because of their lifestyles and choices. Will all of our decisions be the correct ones? No! Will all of our interactions be pleasant? No! But if we would take into consideration the saying “each one teach one” we would be in a much better place.

People are suffering. Depression, anxiety, panic attacks, stress, single parent homes, more bills than money, sickness, homelessness, hunger; all of these are real problems that affect thousands of people daily. While we are arguing over what party should be in office, people are steadily dying from not being able to afford basic food and medicine. While we are letting mediocre family disagreements split us apart, people sit alone with not a soul to talk to. When will we come together as a people? When will we start looking out for one another instead of looking for the differences in each other? We are all closer than we think. There are so many similarities we have with one another if we would just open up. Open your heart Open your mind. But it starts with YOU! YOU be the change! YOU be the difference! YOU be that light in a dark place! And remember to beYOUtiful!
