As we come to the close of another second Sunday in May, also known as Mother’s Day, I would like to wish every single good mom a
HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!!! I hope the moms, moms-to-be, and mother like figures have had an amazing day filled with love, light, and laughter.
On a day that is usually filled with much positivity, I saw something online that was so disturbing (in my opinion) that it almost soured my mood.
Well known comedian, actor, and radio host, Rickey Smiley took to his Instagram today and shared his thoughts on Mother’s Day. In so many words, he basically stated that he feels like people should quietly celebrate Mother’s Day instead of making it a “big deal”, in order to protect the feelings of those that have lost their mom. His followers immediately commented in disagreement with him and I was one of them!
Now don’t get me wrong, I sincerely empathize and sympathize with anyone who has lost a parent. I am so blessed to still have mine so I can’t imagine, nor do I want to imagine what this world would be like without them. However, I will never diminish my love for them because someone else unfortunately cannot share this special day with their parent. I wonder if he truly realizes what he was saying. That would be like not celebrating a friends marriage or asking them to dim their wedding because you aren’t yet married. Or not joining in a promotion celebration because you haven’t made it to where you want to be in your career. That’s pure foolishness!!! Yes, we can be mindful and respectful of those that have lost a parent on days like today but we should never and I mean NEVER let that stop us from freely and openly celebrate our loved ones!
While I enjoy your comedy, radio show, and appreciate your community service Mr. Rickey Smiley, I will not mute Mother’s Day (or Father’s Day) for you!
